The Rules of Golf
Breaking Ties
USGA Rule 33-6
The Committee must announce the manner, day, and time for the decision of a halved match or of a tie, whether played on level terms or under handicap. (NOTE: Match play is halved and stroke play is tied.)
The halved match must not be decided by stroke play. A tie in stroke play must not be decided by a match.
USGA Appendix I
11. How to Decide Ties
Rule 33-6 empowers the Committee to determine how and when a halved match or a stroke play tie is decided. The decision should be announced in advance.
NOTE: There are a number of recommended formats (no mandatory ones) - including an eighteen hole playoff. None are feasible for our SIR 93 Club. We follow Rule 33-6 in that we use stroke handicaps and have announced, in advance, our standard procedure (stroke play on handicap holes). Tie breakers are shown in the reported Results (bulletin and website) by a (hole #) after the name of the winner. See example below.
Jefferson and Madison tied at 71 in Flight B, and Jefferson won the second place tie breaker on handicap hole #2. Adams, J.Q. won the tie breaker for 4th place on handicap hole #4. The (4) indicates that there is at least one other player tied with the same score (76) whose name(s) is/are not included, because, at best, he/they placed 5th or higher.
Flight B
68 Washington
71 Jefferson (2)
71 Madison
76 Adams, J.Q. (4)
Event Prize Points
Points are awarded for four places in each Flight of each event as follows:
1st: 4 pts 2nd: 3 pts 3rd: 2 pts 4th: 1 pt
Each event’s low net medalist receives 2 additional points.
The dollar value of each point is determined by the Committee at the end of the year (value depends on finances); the last several years each point was worth $4.00.
